Parvalbumin-immunoreactive neurons in the brain are often enwrapped in a covering of
extracellular material, the socalled “perineuronal net of extracellular matrix”(for review see
Celio and Bliimcke, 1993). In this article I discuss possible reasons for the preferential
association of this type of nerve cell with “perineuronal nets of extracellular matrix” in the
hippocampus.
